Fighting Irish linebacker and future NFL player Manti Teo’s secret is out and he is now facing the embarrassment of what he says is an online relationship hoax. If you followed Notre Dame football this year, you may know that Teo’s inspiration to succeed was his special love for a woman that he befriended online and loved after she had a horrible car accident and then ended up dying of Leukemia. NBC ran with the heartbreaking story and featured Teo in several clips during the season of him describing how wonderful she was and how he drew strength from her courage. The question many have today is, was Teo using this story as sympathy to win hearts over and garner Heisman Trophy votes or was he simply a victim of a sophisticated “catfish” scam? All eyes today on his press conference where he’ll either provide proof of being duped or confess his involvement. My gut feeling is that he’s a victim but nothing surprises me anymore.
