Drinking Champagne Good For Your Brain? ~ Weird News Wednesday

If you like to have yourself a nice glass of bubbly, you’ll probably be glad to hear that scientists are discovering it has amazing benefits! According to a story on Huffintgon Post, champagne can help prevent mental illnesses such as Dementia and Alzheimer’s, as well boost spatial memory.

The reason for these benefits is a compound in the grapes that make your champagne bubbly!

“This research … illustrates for the first time that moderate consumption of champagne has the potential to influence cognitive functioning such as memory … Champagne, which lacks flavonoids, is also capable of influencing brain function through the actions of smaller phenolic compounds, previously thought to lack biological activity,” said Professor Jeremy Spencer from Reading University.

Don’t get too excited though… because this has not yet been tested on humans! It’s only been tested on rats!

“In the near future we will be looking to translate these findings into humans. This has been achieved successfully with otherpolyphenol-rich foods, such as blueberry and cocoa, and we predict similar outcomes for moderate champagne intake on cognition in humans,” said Dr. David Vauzour, another researcher.

Mimosas, anyone?
