We’ve all heard about it by now, Californians want to leave the Union after the results of the election, but how does it work – can it be done?
There’s a group, called Yes California, and they want to put a referendum on a ballot in 2018 (when we pick a new Governor). The goal would be to become its own independent country. The thing with this one though is that it has a lot of high-dollar investors ready to go, many in the tech industry, so it has pretty serious funding already.
California already has the 6th largest economy in the world, is economically more powerful than France and has more people than Poland, says Yes California. California can be compared to other countries as a whole – not just other states in America.
There isn’t really a set way to secede from the Union, although there is a set of guidelines for allowing a new state in. A couple different options are being worked on and theorized now, one of them poses an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would allow California to withdraw, another would call a “Convention of the States,” where 2/3 of the delegates there would vote to approve a move to independence. It’s a pretty interesting thing to read, and you can see the rest of it here in further detail.
