I don’t know about you, but I lost one of the AirPods the moment I saw the picture of them after the announcement, so I couldn’t imagine actually buying them to lose one. Apple finally has a solution for you though if you lose one or both of them, and it sounds like it will sort of work. Literally.
The easily-lost tiny things pack a punch, and apparently are some of the best earbud-style headphones they sell, and that’s what Apple will be taking advantage of in a soon-to-come iOS update. In iOS 10.3, there will be a new feature. They’re not only going to show you on a map where you last used your AirPods (so you know within a reasonable diameter if they’re home, at your office, in the car, etc), but within the “Find my iPhone” style interface you’ll be able to play a loud sound through the AirPods, assuming they still have some battery power. Those two tools together should get you back in touch with your missing AirPod; at least that’s the plan.
There was an independently-created app on the App Store that allowed you to find the AirPods based on Bluetooth signal strength, but Apple, for some unknown reason, took that app off the Store. More details on the iOS update are here.
