A Nebraska man thought he had a pretty creative way of announcing his and his wife’s new baby’s gender with their family and friends, but it’s put him into a bit of legal trouble, facing a fine of $1,000 and the possibility of a year in jail.
Jon Sterkel’s plan was to place some blue chalk inside of an exploding target, and fire his rifle at it on his farm, record the video and throw it on Facebook. Apparently the explosion the target created was heard as far as 3 miles away, and the local sheriff’s department received a bunch of calls from concerned citizens.
He received a citation “for setting off an explosive without a state permit” after he turned himself in when he heard about the stir the explosion caused on the radio. He says he didn’t know he needed a permit, and apparently many of the local police he spoke to didn’t know a permit was required either, since the targets are commonly found in stores, and he’s been shooting them for a while. He also says that he’s a “man of character” and will “willingly” go to court if it comes to that.
