Well, this is disappointing. Or is it? “Gary from Chicago,” the guy we fell in love with during the Oscars tour bus bit, was released from a 20-year prison sentence 3 days before the show! NY Daily News reports he was serving for multiple felonies, while his lawyer Karen Nash, who petitioned for his release, says it was for petty theft.
She explained in a Facebook post. “Many great lawyers had clients get draconian sentences like that in the 90s,” she wrote. “There was little one could do during the 3 strikes era.”
There’s also reports he’s a registered sex offender in California. Turns out he was busted for attempted rape in the 70s.
Nash added, “He does not have a rape conviction. He served 20 years for petty theft. He has a prior from 1975 for attempted rape when he was a teenager.”
ABC 7 Chicago interviewed Gary yesterday. “Change is possible,” he said. “It’s a sad day to be in prison for 20 years and not be able to be a dad, granddad to your children. You know what my son told me today, man, and I almost come to tears. He said he’s proud of me. So to hear your children say that they’re proud of me means the world to me.”
