She’s a chicken. She wears a tutu, and she’s registered as a therapy animal.
Erica Proctor started a dog rescue called Green Dogs Unleashed. She trains dogs to be service animals, and specializes in deaf and blind pups. When she came across Darla the chicken, as well as 2 other chickens in rough shape, and being a massive animal lover, she knew she had to rescue them and bring them back to health. Unfortunately the two other chickens didn’t make it, but Darla is healthy, and presumably happy, living her new life.
Finn, Erica’s son, took a quick liking to Darla, and they’re very close. Darla also is close with the family’s other pets, and even sat by their deaf and blind dog’s side when she passed. Darla gets her own “dog door” so she can go in and out of the house as she pleases, and she’s been taught how to be a therapy animal. She mostly works with children’s camps and scouts, but Erica is working on a certification to visit schools as a part of a therapy animal program.
Darla helps teach children that chickens are more than just food, and she even provides fresh eggs for the family, and contributes to the family’s bank account when Darla’s, as well as their other chicken’s, eggs are sold by the dozen.
