The upcoming iPhone 8 sounds like it’s a great step up in the world of iPhones, including their new fingerprint scanner that’s buried below the glass screen. Wait – that might be the reason why the release date may be getting rescheduled.
Apple, at least according to rumors, is planning on making the new phone with a full edge-to-edge display on the front. That means it would eliminate the home button, at least as the physical button we’ve known for the past 10 years or so. It will be replaced by a “virtual” home button – basically an icon or something similar on the screen. That means the fingerprint scanner would have to relocate as well – but then they figured they could put the actual scanner under the glass screen.
There’s a problem with using the new fingerprint sensor under the screen though. Experts in the industry say that the supplier that makes the component doesn’t seem to have “production orders” yet to get started on production. Those experts seem to think that Apple is having issues getting the new scanner working correctly, and may eliminate fingerprint scanning from the iPhone 8 all together to avoid further delay. This suggests they may be using another type of security, however being unproven tech, it’s a security risk that may stop certain customers from purchasing the phone, if biometric-type security is important to the user.
