Adonai Gutierrez turned 7, but after waiting a couple hours for the invited guests to arrive to the spot his mom set up in Woodside Park, he blew out his candles alone.
His aunt, disappointed that nobody showed up besides a few family members, went on Facebook. She’s a member of the “Good Neighbors of Woodland” page, and after telling the story, hundreds of commenters started hatching a plan. Strangers from Facebook started sending birthday cards and gifts. He woke up the next morning “with a whole bunch of notifications” on his phone, and had no idea what was going on at first.
Then, this past Sunday, they threw him a surprise birthday party. There was plenty of food, bounce houses, three cakes, all sorts of things, all donated by total strangers. He even got a ride to the park in a hot-rod, metallic green no less. There were about 200 people there, all for his surprise party, and mostly strangers.
He had to hold onto his grandmother because he felt like he “was going to fall over” from all the excitement. Adonai says it was his favorite birthday yet.
Happy Birthday little guy, glad you got to enjoy it, and have one heck of a story to tell all those kids who didn’t show up.
