Yep, it was only a matter of time before the hottest (not literally) Starbucks drink was at the center of a lawsuit. Back in December, a coffee shop in New York, called “The End Brooklyn,” has been selling their own version of a latte, simply referred to as “unicorn.” Their Unicorn Latte actually has a trademark pending, they applied for it in January, months before Starbucks released their own Unicorn Frappuccino. They’re very different, with The End’s version using healthier ingredients, vs. Starbucks’ use of mostly sugary syrups.
Co-owner of The End, Bret Caretsy says that their most popular product has been their unicorn latte. That’s their most popular product overall, since they’ve been open. The lawyer in the case is saying that the massive size and reach of Starbucks is “an unfair advantage,” and went on to say that Starbucks’ actions are “severely damaging” the smaller shop. Starbucks’ lawyers say the claims made by The End “are without merit,” and went on to say that the Starbucks Unicorn Frappuccino was inspired by social media trends.
It seems a little far-fetched, but maybe there are some details in the case we’re not aware of yet. Either way, The End wants an unknown amount of money for some form of damages, and a public apology.
