Woman With Down Syndrome First To Compete In Miss Minnesota USA

I love this story because of the message behind it. At first when I read the headline, I thought “this shouldn’t be a story, this woman is just like the rest of us” and then I read what Mikayla Holmgren had to say about her participation in the pageant.

Mikayla is no stranger to the spotlight. She’s a dancer and a gymnast who has already won the title of Miss Minnesota Amazing, which is a pageant for women with disabilities. The 22 year old college student decided to aim higher, dream bigger and apply for Miss Minnesota.

She told People, “I want to do this, I want to show my personality. I want to show what my life looks like, being happy, and joyful. I want to show what Down Syndrome looks like.” I LOVE THAT.
