Melissa McCarthy was invited back to host Saturday Night Live. Not just to host again, but to host for the fifth time. The show had the best ratings its seen in the past 7 years with 10.3 million people watching, and that’s including higher ratings than when Justin Timberlake hosted in 2011 with Lady Gaga as the musical guest. It actually tied with “The Big Bang Theory” as the highest-rated show of the week.
You probably even saw clips on your Facebook feeds, it was a pretty highly social media driven campaign, teasing one of the sketches where Melissa plays White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer. You can only assume what jokes were made, and you’d probably be right, as it was just a series of joke after crack, one right after another.
And at the close of the show, a guest appearance by Steve Martin, congratulating Melissa on joining the “5-Timers Club,” as in having hosted the show 5 or more times.
There’s no question that Melissa McCarthy is a comedic genius, and she’s very focussed when she’s in character, and is a complete joy to watch in anything she’s a part of.
