Much like Polygamists who marry multiple people, and monogamists who marry one person, a sologamist is someone who marries themselves. “Self-marriage is about being and celebrating one’s own worth and independence. One woman who married herself last year says it’s about women saying “yes” to themselves. “It means that we are enough, even if we are not partnered with someone else.”
It isn’t illegal, but also isn’t recognised as a legal union, by law. Despite that, companies are actually beginning to offer “sologamist marriage kits” and services. IMarriedMe offers a full package deal – a wedding band, affirmation cards and vows, and a full ceremony kit. Another website offers consulting and photography packages.
We had Kennelia Stradwick from ABC 10’s Morning Blend show with her opinion:
What do you think about this trend? Is it something that makes sense, or is it just a nonsensical ploy for attention? Can you celebrate being independant and strong without marrying yourself?
