He’s just 13, but seems to now be prepared for “that moment” when the time comes. His mother, Zephy Mahlis, made a teen “survival kit” for his 13th birthday. In the kit there was some cash, gift cards, hair gel, a shaving kit, some soaps, a bunch of things, including a few condoms.
The mom said in a Facebook post “Thank you Kmart for my son’s shadow box. He is turning 13 so I made him a teenager emergency kit LOL please no nasty comments.” She says that they’re actually share a very close relationship, and their family is known to joke around with each other.
They already have a pretty open dialogue about sex, and she says the condoms were really there just to help grow that dialogue even more. She says “I’ve guided him as much as I can by teaching him when that time comes to make it special not just for you but that girl too.” She also added that she made it clear that he understands what happens when you have sex, including pregnancy and STDs.
Do you think what she did is appropriate? Would you do the same, or have you found yourself avoiding having “the chat” with your kids?
