Ed Sheeran says he’s been struggling with figuring out why so many people dislike him on social media. “One comment ruins your day. But that’s why I’ve come off it,” he says. He’s been receiving a lot of hate messages, especially from Lady Gaga fans. Why Lady Gaga fans? Well, he said something in a recent interview that some people thought was about Gaga (it wasn’t about her at all), and they’ve been blowing up at Ed.
What did he say in that previous interview? He was talking about success as an artist, and keeping up with it:
I do not want to be the kind of artist who has had two successful albums and then feels invincible. I have to know when to listen to people, or I’ll end up like those artists you’ve interviewed in recent years. You’ve seen them become the biggest artists in the world, and then suddenly they will say, ‘I know everything!’ And just after, they are no longer at the top. The smartest thing to do is listen to people who know I do not want to do the Super Bowl years later, after my biggest success, just to prove I’m still relevant.
Ed says that he was just giving an example scenario, and not actually calling any specific artist out, like a broad statement, but Lady Gaga fans felt like he was calling Gaga out, and they’ve all been directing hateful messages to him on social media. So for now, Ed’s taking a break. He says he has “reality checks” from people close to him, like his father who will have a genuine, real conversation with him.
Will he be back? Probably, we’re guessing. His accounts are all still active, but his team will be handling social media for him until further notice.
Lady Gaga even came to Ed’s support, showing that all was well between the two, and to try and knock out some of the cyber-hate and bullying:
We love you Ed, sorry for all the haters.
