Company Recalls Deadly Pet Food, Tries To Donate It To Animal Shelters

Back in February, Evanger’s Dog & Cat Food faced a major recall after some of their dog food was found to contain deadly amounts of a euthanasia drug.

While you might think the story would end with them trashing the poisoned meals, that’s not quite the case…..

The Sacramento Bee has reported that the company recently tried donating the recalled food to animal shelters. This is despite the fact that lab tests found large amounts of a euthanasia drug in the canned dog food, which had sickened five dogs and left one dead.

While the company claimed they were planning on spot-checking the recalled food so they would only donate unaffected products, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently ruled they will not be allowed to do this.

The FDA explained that the drugs were not found uniformly through the affected batches, meaning the spot-checking would be ineffective. They further stated in a warning letter on their website:

“FDA does not find it acceptable to donate any recalled products and instead recommends destruction of all remaining units.”

The FDA also found the deadly drug in other products the company sold, such as Evanger’s Braised Beef Chunks and Against the Grain Grain-Free Pulled Beef with Gravy, the Sacramento Bee stated. They company is still under investigation.
