Ed Sheeran, earlier this year, gave himself a goal: Sell more records than Adele.
Apparently that implied the desire to be more successful than Adele, and Adele fans didn’t like that at all. He started hearing from angry Adele fans who basically heard, says Ed, “I want to be bigger than Adele.” After that, he says he was “shut down.” Ed explained the statement, and the ambition behind it, in an interview over the weekend.
He clarified by saying that it’s a goal, and just like with any goal, you strive for the best you can imagine and work towards it. Ed says “I probably won’t sell 20 million records. And I probably won’t ever be as big as Adele. But if you don’t aim for the top of the mountain, how are you ever gonna get halfway?” And now everything makes perfect sense.
