‘Aggressive’ Panhandlers Could Face Harsher Consequences In Sacramento

Have you ever been at an ATM or sitting in your car at a red light and approached by a panhandler asking for change? That could soon change…

SacBee.com says that a revamped city code prohibiting hostile panhandling in certain places is under consideration by the City Council’s Law and Legislation Committee. The new code would make hostile panhandling prohibited

  • within 35 feet of ATMs, at gas stations, along roadway medians
  • within 50 feet of public transit stops
  • within 200 feet of an intersection
  • within 35 feet of a driveway accessing a shopping center

The new code would make it a misdemeanor if a person is cited twice for the same offense within a 6-month period. The article says that it’s currently just an infraction.
