Sacramento Identity Thieves Arrested After Skimming 450 Credit Cards

Watch out for ATM skimmers!

According to the Sacramento Bee, 450 debit and credit cards in the Sacramento area were compromised after two men allegedly placed skimming devices on several bank ATMs. $200,000 was later stolen from victim’s accounts.

While the identity theft happened back in April, those two men have just been arrested.

Luis Jose Ruiz-Gainza, 43, and Ricardo Gabriele-Plage, 36, were apprehended at Sunrise Mall in Citrus Heights, and they are believed to be part of a larger organized crime group based in Venezuela.

Sgt. Tony Turnbull, the Sacramento Sheriff’s Department spokesman, warns that people should report any suspicious activity as soon as possible:

“The quicker you report (the fraud), the better chance we have of catching (the perpetrators), because they might still be using the card.”
