Luis Fonsi created a hit with The Biebs – “Despacito” has just tied for second place as the longest-running Number-1 song on the Hot-100 chart. It tied with “Macarena,” from all the way back in 1996. Remember that one? It was a big deal. Everyone knew the dance. Everyone.
Not only that, but they’re both also mostly non-english speaking songs. Amazing how you can find trends in things like that, isn’t it? Anyway, the songs spent 14 weeks in the Number-1 spot, and there have only been 8 songs in the 50-year history of the chart to be on top near that long, including Bruno Mars with “Uptown Funk,” and The Black Eyed Peas with “I Got a Feeling.”
Just two more weeks at Number-1, and it’ll be the longest-running Number-1 ever on the Hot-100 chart, passing Mariah Carey/Boyz II Men’s “One Sweet Day.” Justin Bieber, making history.
