The VMAs happened last night, and there was everyone’s fair share of drama or illness, but the show went on without interruption. Unless you’re Julia Michaels who was rudely interrupted during her performance of “Issues.” Actually it was just the broadcast that cut to commercial break, her actual performance wasn’t interrupted, as seen below:
Lorde had the flu. Not just, like, a cough and fever, but full-on, needs medical attention and an IV kind of flu. She was able to dance for her performance rather than sing though, and she looked amazing, but you could just sort of tell that she wasn’t feeling quite right.
We can’t not address the Katy Perry/Taylor Swift beef, either. First of all, Taylor Swift wasn’t even in attendance. Not for her music video debut for “Look What You Made Me Do,” not even to accept her award for “Best Collaboration” for her and Zayn’s song “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever.” Katy Perry didn’t even introduce the video, the show came back from commercial straight into Taylor Swift’s music video, then into a PSA, then Yara Shahidi (from “Blackish”) introduced Shawn Mendes. Katy Perry was just gone. No mention, no appearance in the background, nothing. That’s some beef.
If you’re looking for a list of winners, you can find that here, but here’s a quick version:
-Ed Sheeran got “Artist of the Year”
-Zayn and Taylor Swift won for “Best Collaboration”
-Zedd and Alessia Cara won “Best Dance” for “Stay”
-Twenty One Pilots won “Best Rock” for their song “Heavydirtysoul”
