Apple have been rumored to be working on some super-secret automotive project for a couple years now, complete with a super-secret facility (and rumors say the sounds of clanking metal can be heard from the facility at night), and we’ve finally got some more details about what’s been going on.
Is it a car? Is it some sort of interface? Well, that’s still sort of a mystery. They are, at least they were, planning to build an actual car. A physical, sit-in and ride-around car, but they realized that they have a few more years of planning to go before they can really feasibly start on that. In the mean time, they’re working on the electronics for the car, and that can be retrofitted (probably) for other uses, to make self-driving cars.
Just like Tesla has their AutoPilot, and Google, Uber, and Lyft already have self-driving cars, Apple is getting into the autonomous game. The software required for self-driving is the complex part, and Apple has the resources (included in their $12 billion research fund for this year) to pull off the software. The hardware, the actual mechanical devices that control the car are the easy part. It’s the brain they want to focus on.
With all this autonomous experimentation going on already, do you think Apple is late to the game? Think they may be able to pull it off, and actually be a successful competitor?
Are we ready for self-driving cars to become more popular?
